Short Overview

There Is No Way Out presents the uncompromising vision of David Watson, whose career spans more than six decades documenting the industrial landscape of Teesside. From smoke-filled skies above steelworks to dockyards, furnaces, and working-class streets, Watson’s paintings bear witness to both the environment and the people shaped by it.

Mr Watson said “I paint what I see and feel the recollections of hard workers, the filth, the muck, and the black smoke from chimneys. Working in the shipyards and industrial North East, I witnessed the real grit and the ghostly faces of tired people every day all of this just to put bread on the table.”

His work reflects the grit of industrial labour, yet within this harshness he captures resilience, solidarity, and a quiet, haunting beauty. Even today, Watson continues to live and work within this industrial landscape, maintaining a direct, lived connection to the world he portrays.

The exhibition title speaks to the stark realities of communities forged by iron, fire, and water, where cycles of work and survival leave lasting marks on both landscape and people. Visitors are invited to experience decades of observation, feeling the weight of industry and the strength of those who lived within it.

There Is No Way Out stands as both a meditation on the permanence of industry in Teesside and a testament to Watson’s lifelong commitment to recording a way of life in constant transformation.

Let these perspectives guide you, step into their world.
