John Wheeler paints scenes of everyday life, focusing on ordinary people in familiar, unremarkable moments. His subjects are drawn from the world around him, glimpsed on buses and trains, seated in cafés, engaged in conversation, or simply walking through the street. He also works from images found in magazines and online. These individuals remain anonymous; their personal histories unknown, allowing them to exist within the painting purely as visual and emotional presence.

Wheeler begins with observational drawings, which form the foundation for his paintings. From this starting point, each image evolves intuitively, shaped by memory, past experiences and the lasting influence of artists who have inspired him. Childhood recollections and fragments of personal history often surface during this process, subtly informing the final composition.

Rather than striving for portrait like likeness, Wheeler uses the figure as a point of departure. His aim is not to document identity, but to create space for interpretation. Through this approach, he invites viewers into a quiet dialogue with the work, encouraging personal reflection, emotional resonance, and the possibility of recognising something of their own experience within the image.
